One of the goals of the Tailwinds Bicycle Club is to promote bicycle safety with the children of our community. To accomplish that goal, each year, the Club selects 2-4 local elementary schools to participate in a bicycle safety essay contest. Each school selects four first place and four second place winners from grades 3 through 6. This year’s Bike Giveaway contest was run by Jim who did a great job in choosing the schools and organizing the events. The kids enjoyed Gary playing his harmonica and singing “the blues” over losing his bike when he was a kid. Victor did a “show and tell” about how his helmet saved his life in a bike accident some years ago. This was also a crowd pleaser. Victor always lets the kids see the damaged helmet up close and they are very impressed. David gave a brief talk regarding bicycle safety.
This year the schools selected were: Oakley and Fairlawn Elementary schools. The giveaways took place June 5th and June 10th. Thank you to Pedal Power and Cycle Star bicycle shops for giving us a good price on the bikes. |
