The Wheelin’ Warriors are a group comprised of 11 athletes with special needs aged 17 to 57 who formerly competed in cycling as members of North Santa Barbara County Special Olympics. The team overcame a few big hurdles before becoming members of the Tailwinds Bicycle Club. In September, 2008, days before a major competition of the Special Olympics Cycling Team’s regular season, the athletes’ bikes and equipment were stolen out of a locked trailer. The response from individual donors and organizations was overwhelming and allowed for the replacement of the stolen equipment and for a new cargo trailer. At the same time, the team learned that the Southern CA Special Olympics Organization had decided to cancel several sponsored sports for 2009, including Cycling. Upon learning that Special Olympics Cycling had also been canceled, several donors then directed their support to the formation of a cycling club for athletes with special needs to ensure the athletes could still participate in cycling and to allow for the expansion of the team.

The head coach of the Special Olympics Cycling team, Cheryl Dettrick, sought to organize a year round opportunity for these athletes and formed the Wheelin’ Warriors Club. With this, we secured a new trailer, uniforms, supplies, and monthly transportation for the athletes to various ride locations. To formally establish the Wheelin’ Warriors as a non-profit club, the Wheelin’ Warriors approached Tailwinds Bicycle Club to discuss opportunities for the athletes and families to join as members. In January 2009 the Warriots became an official part of the Tailwinds Bicycle Club of Santa Maria.
